CONSUMER ATTORNEYS HONOR PROMINENT JURISTS, ATTORNEYS

LOS ANGELES—Five prominent lawyers and jurists have been recognized for their contributions to the civil justice system by the Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles.

The honorees for 2009 are Arash Homampour (Trial Lawyer of the Year), Amy Solomon (Ted Horn Award), Sharon Arkin (Ian Herzog Appellate Lawyer of the Year), Hon. R. Bruce Minto (Alfred J. McCourtney Trial Judge of the Year) and Hon. Laurence Rubin (Roger J. Traynor Appellate Justice of the Year).

The honorees were recognized at the Consumer Attorneys 61st annual Installation and Awards Dinner on Jan. 23 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

“We are honored to recognize these distinguished members of the legal profession for their contributions to the protection of the civil justice system,” said Garo Mardirossian, 2010 President of Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles.  “Each has made significant contributions and we applaud their accomplishments.”

Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles is the nation’s largest local association of plaintiffs’ attorneys.  It was founded in 1949 and currently has a membership of nearly 3,000 consumer attorneys.  The association’s mission is to educate the public about the importance of the American civil justice system, one of the fundamental bedrocks of the American democracy.

ARASH HOMAMPOUR (TRIAL LAWYER OF THE YEAR)
Homampour was born in Chicago and obtained a B.S. in Finance from USC and his law degree from Southwestern University School of Law.  During the last six years he has obtained more than $120 million in settlements, verdicts, judgments and awards for his clients.  He represents individuals in insurance bad faith, employment and catastrophic injury/wrongful death matters.

AMY SOLOMON (TED HORN AWARD)
Amy Solomon is a partner with Girardi & Keese where for more than twenty years she has distinguished herself as one of the nation’s premier trial lawyers.  She has successfully tried more than two dozen jury and bench trials in State and Federal Courts and obtained numerous seven and eight figure verdicts and settlements on behalf of her clients.  The Ted Horn Award is named for the lawyer who was a founding member of the Association and is remembered for ingraining in the culture of the plaintiffs’ bar the attitude of lending support to fellow attorneys.

SHARON ARKIN (IAN HERZOG APPELLATE LAWYER OF THE YEAR)
A certified appellate specialist, Sharon Arkin is the principal in the Arkin Law Firm and has more than 25 published decisions including the 2009 decision In re Tobacco II Cases that addressed some of the critical standing questions resulting from the passage of Proposition 64.

HON. R. BRUCE MINTO (ALFRED J. MCCOURTNEY TRIAL JUDGE OF THE YEAR)
Judge Minto graduated from U.C. Irvine and UCLA School of Law.  In 2000 he became a judge of the L.A. County Superior Court and was assigned to the Pomona Courthouse where he continues to serve.  In 23 years on the bench he has handled thousands of diverse matters and presided over more than 500 jury trials.

 HON. LAURENCE RUBIN (ROGER TRAYNOR APPELLATE JUSTICE OF THE YEAR)
Justice Rubin was born, raised and educated in Southern California, graduating from UCLA and UCLA School of Law. He was first appointed to the bench in1982 and became a Los Angeles Superior Court judge in 2000.  In 2001 was the first Justice confirmed to the then-new Division Eight of the Court of Appeal.  Eight of his 27 years on the bench have been as a justice in that division.
