Every Moment’s An Ambush: Dangerous Conditions of Public Property

Summary

Faulty road design, bad crosswalks, falling trees, cracked sidewalks, sinkholes…. These are some of the dangerous conditions of public property that we face anytime we step outside – and they may have caused your client’s injuries. Join some of CAALA’s most outstanding young attorneys as they teach you the basics of crafting a solid case against cities, counties, the state, and other public entities – and how to recognize and overcome various governmental defenses and immunities – so that you can get justice for your client.

Presenters

Casey Hultin is a trial attorney at Dolan Law Firm PC. She earned her bachelor’s degree from UCLA, where she was part of the prestigious mock trial program, and went on to attend University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. During law school, Casey was a semi-finalist at the AAJ mock trial competition, taught undergraduate legal studies courses, and was an editor for the Berkeley Technology & Law Journal. After law school, Casey initially practiced intellectual property and entertainment litigation, but quickly learned that she preferred representing individuals instead of corporations. In 2017, she switched to personal injury and wrongful death cases and was able to try her first case as lead trial counsel, Harry v. Ring The Alarm, a premises liability case which ultimately resulted in an appellate decision preventing defendants from broadening the primary assumption of risk doctrine. She has never looked back.

Aghavni Kasparian is a litigator and trial lawyer who founded her Pasadena-based law firm, KP LAW, in 2015. Prior to forming KP LAW, Aghavni was a partner in a products liability and mass tort litigation defense firm in Los Angeles, California, where she litigated and managed all aspects of state and federal personal injury, product liability, wrongful death, premises liability, and property damage cases. She has particular expertise in aviation disaster and consumer product liability cases.

Shea Murphy is an Appellate Specialist, certified by the State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization. He handles appeals and writs as well as assists plaintiffs' attorneys with motion and pleading work before trial courts. He has worked on a wide variety of premises liability and dangerous condition cases, helping to shape the law on the unique issues in these cases, such as in Toeppe v. City of San Diego, 13 Cal. App. 5th 921 (2017).

Brian Needelman is a member of Johnston & Hutchinson LLP. Brian received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola Marymount University, and went on to attend UCLA School of Law. During law school, Brian interned with the Los Angeles City Attorney and San Diego Public Defender, where he first developed a passion for representing the underdog. Since joining Johnston & Hutchinson LLP in 2013, Brian has handled catastrophic personal injury, wrongful death, and insurance bad faith cases for people who have been wronged by major corporate and government interests. Brian has been instrumental in the firm’s largest verdicts and settlements both as a trial lawyer and as the leader of the firm’s Pleading and Appellate group. Brian has a demonstrated track record of engaging with and overcoming complex liability issues before and during trial. Brian has been named as a Super Lawyers Rising Star each year since 2018. Brian is a 2019 graduate of the Trial Lawyer’s college, which affirmed his passion for fighting for people against corporations and the government.

He is Board Certified in Admiralty and Maritime Law by the Florida Bar Board of Legal Specialization, and he is a graduate of the Los Angeles County Bar Trial Advocacy Program.
