Policy Limits Demands, “Opening the Policy,” and Insurance Bad Faith 101

Join Puneet Toor and Torsten Bassell as they lead March’s CAALA New Lawyers Roundtable discussion on the nuts and bolts of policy limits demands, “opening up” policies, and insurance bad faith. They will go over what to include and what to leave out in demand letters in both employment and personal injury cases, discuss “opening up” a policy, and walk you step-by-step through the basics of insurance bad faith. Come learn the nuts and bolts and hear their practical advice so you can refine your next demand letter to maximize your client’s recovery.

Roundtable Discussion Speakers:

Torsten Bassell is a partner at Lari-Joni & Bassell, LLP. He is a trial lawyer, who has secured significant settlements, verdicts, and judgments for his clients in cases involving personal injury and insurance bad faith. Since starting his practice, he has tried cases throughout Northern and Southern California. His verdicts have been featured by The Recorder and The National Law Journal as some of the "Top 100 Verdicts" in California and the nation.

Belinda Theam is the Managing Attorney of Nguyen Lawyers, ALC. Alongside Minh T. Nguyen, she has second chaired multiple trials to verdict and obtained settlements in excess of $21 million on behalf of her clients. Recent results include Minh and Belinda obtaining a $6 million settlement in 2018 for a young woman who sustained a brain injury in a truck versus automobile crash, and a $4 million settlement in 2017 for a man who was injured in a construction site incident.

Puneet K. Toor is the founder of Toor Law, APC where she specializes in personal injury, products liability, employment law and consumer fraud litigation. Ms. Toor’s expertise ranges from representing catastrophically injured plaintiffs and their families to claims on behalf of employees who have been wrongfully terminated, harassed or retaliated against in the workplace.
