Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles
Eric Kingsley —Consumer Attorneys Member of the Month

Most Consumer Attorneys will tell you that they are dedicated to helping people.

Most will also tell you that giving back to the community is important to them.

Consumer Attorneys member Eric Kingsley believes in both of the above statements, but he has been able to take them to a level matched by very few members of the Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles.

Kingsley has been selected as Consumer Attorneys Member of the Month because of his dedication to helping people and to giving back, a commitment that has resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars being granted to various charitable and cause-related organizations.

Kingsley & Kingsley
Kingsley graduated from Loyola Law School and was admitted to the Bar in 1996. He joined Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles one year later.

He is currently in practice with his father George and three other attorneys, in the employment law firm Kingsley & Kingsley. Eric has concentrated his practice on “wage law” for more than eight years. He has litigated cases in state and federal court and has authored several appellate briefs.

He has handled dozens of class actions regarding the failure to provide employees with meal and rest breaks, overtime and other issues. Current cases involve national restaurant chains, hotel and motel chains and pharmaceutical companies.

Kingsley strongly believes in protecting the rights of ordinary working people who have been exploited by big business. In the past, the firm has achieved several significant settlements on behalf of their clients.

In addition to his time at work, he dedicates his time to several non-profit organizations, advising them on both legal and other issues. One such organization is Bet Tzedek, a legal aid organization that provides free legal assistance to thousands of people who would otherwise be denied access to the legal system.

Los Angeles Trial Lawyers’ Charities
Last year, Kingsley was approached by Bruce Traney, a member of Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles, to see if he would be interested in helping with a new charitable organization that was created by Traney and his partner Nick Kazandjieff.

Los Angeles Trial Lawyers’ Charities is committed to making a positive difference in the quality of life for people within the greater Los Angeles community where many plaintiffs’ lawyers live and work.

Naturally, Kingsley said he would be glad to help, the same answer that Traney got from many trial lawyers in Los Angeles.

But it’s the way he agreed to help that separates Kingsley from other members of Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles.

Kingsley agreed to not only support the group with his time and energy, he also agreed to make a unique financial commitment to the charity, support that he has provided many times to various organizations.

Cy pres award
Kingsley agreed to arrange for a five-figure cy pres award from one of his recent settlements to be made to Traney’s fledgling charity.

For those readers not familiar with cy pres awards, they are the funds that result from a Class Action settlement when not all class members can be located or the defendant’s conduct has made full restitution to all injured victims impossible or not feasible.

Under such circumstances, the courts may approve a charitable donation out of the unclaimed class action funds.

This is where Kingsley has gone beyond the commitments of most Consumer Attorneys to help people and give back.

In the past three years, Kingsley has arranged for charitable organizations to receive more than $500,000 in cy pres awards.

Past awards arranged for by Kingsley have gone to organizations including Bet Tzedek, the Anti-Defamation league, the Impact Fund, California Rural Legal Assistance and the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights.

Because of Kingsley’s commitment and unprecedented support of charitable organizations such as Los Angeles Trial Lawyers’ Charities, he has been selected the Consumer Attorneys Member of the Month.
