Dear CAALA Member:

In 2017, ASCDC, CAALA, and LA ABOTA partnered with leadership from LASC and developed a successful Personal Injury (PI) Mandatory Settlement Conference (MSC) program. Cases ordered into the program from the PI Hub were provided a free 3-hour MSC in which one Defense attorney and one Plaintiff’s attorney partnered to act as settlement officers. Approximately 50% of the cases ordered into the program settled.

In recent months, the court’s leadership and ASCDC, CAALA, and LA ABOTA, with strong support from the Beverly Hills Bar Foundation, have once again partnered to take this same program to a virtual platform, Resolve Law LA. As before, volunteer Plaintiff and Defense attorneys act as Settlement Officers in cases ordered into the program from the PI Hub, but now the MSCs will be virtual and conducted via Zoom.

The Resolve Law LA website is live (as of 6/21/21) and accepting volunteer Settlement Officer registrations for the initial round of MSCs, through August 31, 2021. MSCs are scheduled Monday through Friday, excluding court holidays, at 9 am-12:00 pm and 1:30-4:30 pm, and will be conducted through the Resolve Law LA website in the integrated Zoom platform. If you have 10 or more years of litigation experience, please register now and volunteer as a Plaintiff Settlement Officer, Defense Settlement Officer, or neutral Settlement Officer.

If you wish to volunteer to be a Settlement Officer, click here. Once you register, you will select the dates and times for your service. Instructional materials designed to assist the Settlement Officers with conducting Zoom MSCs are available here.

As with the in-person program, Plaintiff’s counsel is responsible for coordinating with defense counsel to schedule the MSC for cases ordered into the program. Plaintiff’s counsel will register the case, provide defense counsel’s information, and schedule the MSC for a mutually agreed upon date and time. Counsel will upload confidential MSC briefs to the site and Settlement Officers will access the briefs from the Resolve Law LA system.

Along with LASC leadership, we will conduct a Town Hall webinar on June 28, 2021, at 12:00 pm to provide valuable information and instructions on conducting the MSCs. We strongly encourage all potential Settlement Officers and lawyers who have cases pending in the PI Hub to attend this Town Hall. You can learn more about the Town Hall and register to attend here.

We would like to thank Presiding Judge Eric Taylor, Assistant Presiding Judge Samantha Jessner, Supervising Judge of the Civil Division David Cowan, Hon. Zaven Sinanian, Hon. Michele Flurer, Deni Butler, Chief Deputy of Operations, and Nancy Bullock, Director of Civil Operations, for their time, hard work, and support for Resolve Law LA. We are thrilled to offer this program to the greater Los Angeles community.
