As attorneys, we meet our clients in the worst times of their lives. We become their advocates and voice during the life of their cases. We are doing hard work that is full of adversity and trauma. Learning from others who have been doing this for a while is helpful. This is where mentoring comes into play! Over the years, many CAALA members have played an essential role in my career. Some of them still provide me with advice and counsel to this day. In turn, I have paid that forward in mentoring others. It is one of the most rewarding roles in my professional life.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the appointment of 18 Superior Court Judges at the beginning of May, including two in Los Angeles County. Allison Westfahl Kong, Chief of Ethics and Post-Conviction Review at the U.S. Attorney’s Office since 2023, will serve as a Judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Victor Avila, a Senior Deputy District Attorney since 2012, has been appointed as an interim Judge in the same court.

On May 14th Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero, chair of the Commission on Judicial Appointments, announced that the commission unanimously confirmed three nominations to California's Courts of Appeal in Los Angeles and San Francisco: 

• Justice Gonzalo Martinez as presiding justice of the Second District Court of Appeal, Division Seven (Los Angeles)
• Judge Natalie P. Stone as associate justice of the Second Appellate District, Division Seven (Los Angeles)
• Judge Tara Desautels as associate justice of the First District Court of Appeal, Division Two (San Francisco)

The CAALA Plaintiff Trial Academy is an in-person program that provides newer trial lawyers with intensive training and techniques in trial preparation from CAALA's most accomplished trial lawyers. Designed for plaintiff trial attorneys with three or more years of practice, the program consists of a condensed schedule of thirteen days of intense instruction and videotaped student presentations, followed by critiques from the faculty.
